Gummy bears – as they are being called – are the newly released silicone implants that have earned their nickname for the squishy texture that holds its shape – like a gummy bear.

The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the Natrelle’s 410 anatomically shaped, highly cohesive silicone implants in late February. The approval of Allegran Inc.’s (manufacturer) implants – for use in breast augmentations of women 22 and older and for reconstruction procedures in women of all ages – came after a seven year study of more than 900 women.

Although there were cases of complications common to breast augmentation procedures, “the data supports that these implants are reasonable safe and effective,” says Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

This is a far cry from the silicone implants of the past whose reputation is tainted with horror stories of leaks, tissue scarring and an overall complication rate that is significantly higher than that of saline filled styles, which actually have silicone shells themselves.

So why even bother with silicone implants, you ask?
Silicone implants offer several advantages over the saline style that include:

• No “rippling” effect

• More natural feel

• Anatomical shapes

• Increased longevity

No ripples

Although breast implants are for augmentation (enlargement) of breasts, if the patient has very little breast tissue, the implant can be difficult to hide. When saline implants are used under these circumstances, there can be what is known as the “ripple effect” – where the rippling of the saline (salt water) implants can be seen through the skin. Silicone – especially the highly cohesive silicone used in gummy bear implants – eliminates this issue as the implant holds its shape and doesn’t fold or ripple.

They just feel more natural

“When women do a ‘feel test’ I would say that nine out of 10 prefer the feel of silicone implants,” says Dr. Cuber, a plastic surgeon in New Jersey. “Of course there are other factors besides feel that we discuss during the consultation which, ultimately, contribute to going with either silicone or saline implants.”

Vast configurations

“Because saline implants have a sloshy salt water filling, the breast – in effect – shapes the implant,” says Dr. Shain Cuber, a plastic surgeon in New Jersey. “I particularly like the firmness of the gummy bear implants and their vast variations because it allows me to use the implant to shape the breast when I perform breast augmentation in NJ. With the gummy bear implant, correcting asymmetry is a far more feasible task and the tear drop shape just looks more natural.”

Longer lasting

It’s true that implants – silicone and saline – won’t last forever. Breast augmentation patients will require a future procedure(s) and there is no way to predict when the silicone implants of the past had a greater rate of longevity compared to the typical 15-year expiration the manufacturers of saline implants suggest. Since the new gummy bear implants have only been used in procedures for seven years (when testing began) there isn’t any proof that they will last longer, only hopes that their longevity compares to their retired, less cohesive counterparts.

One drawback of the gummy bear implant is that it isn’t well suited for women with extreme laxity. Because they are firmer, they won’t hold their shape as well in this type of breast and remain best suited for women with less breast tissue and average to above average laxity.

The Car Salesman

Although Dave Willcocks admits that he had to put up with a lot of bantering from his mates – he also says that “no one can deny that he looks 10 years younger” since his procedures. Dave felt time had dealt him a poor hand and he was simply displeased with the man staring back at him in the mirror.

At the time of Dave’s interview with The Sun’s Christina Earle it had been almost six years since his procedures and he still felt he looked good, “just young for his age.”

The Mechanic

When Trevor Atkinson became obsessed with his hooded (heavy skin covering the natural crease) eyelids – to a point where he thought everyone was staring at them – he decided it was time to take action. For example, many people research the terms surgical rhinoplasty versus non surgical rhinoplasty. The non surgical rhinoplasty is not actually a rhinoplasty, but instead is a series of injections into the nose to change the appearance.  ”Patients often think that the same things can be accomplished as with surgical rhinoplasty, but without performing surgery,” says Dr. Miller, who is a rhinoplasty specialist. “That is why seeing the physician is so important.”  The non surgical rhinoplasty utilizes Radiesse to make an improvement to the shape of the nose.  Specifically, Radiesse can cause the bump to appear corrected by injecting above and below it. Radiesse injections are a simple 1,2,3 procedure that takes about 5 minutes, with no down time. Results last about 12 months.

“However, if the tip needs to be thinned or supported, or if a permanent change in desired, then surgery is generally the best method,” says Dr. Miller, who also specializes in facelifts.  These important points can come out if a patient goes on multiple consultations to educate themselves about the desired surgery or procedure.

First, many patients, especially weight loss patients, can be self conscious about their arms. After loosing a large amount of weight, the skin can become loose, creating a sagging appearance. With this procedure you have the option – depending on the surgeon – to be awake or “out.” Although there are more incidences of complications, general anesthesia is preferred by most surgeons. As long you have chosen an experienced and board certified physician, you have reduced any risk of complication greatly.

After
A lot of people think that following their butt augmentation they will stand up and walk away with a great butt and that’s it. But there is more. Surgeries like the Brazilian butt lift require an instrument to be inserted and reinserted in areas like the stomach, love handles and thighs while fat is harvested after which a a similar method is used to re-inject the fat into the buttocks. Therefore, following butt augmentation, there will be pain, swelling and possibly bruising. It’s not easy, comfortable or advised to return to normal everyday activities and some patients may even need assistance for a few days. The discomfort of this phase dissipates over the course of a week and the results should be worth it. And speaking of results, as mentioned earlier, there is no guarantee how much fat will be reabsorbed following a Brazilian butt lift. However, advances in fat grafting techniques and processes have increased the average percentage of fat that establishes since the procedure was introduced.
