Difference Between Open Versus Closed Rhinoplasty and Its Benefits

EDISON, NEW JERSEY – Those who are considering cosmetic surgery of the nose, also referred to as a rhinoplasty, often find themselves wondering what to expect. Dr. Andrew Miller, a rhinoplasty surgeon in New Jersey, is discussing the procedure, its benefits and the options available for patients.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently performed procedures in the industry, said Dr. Miller, who also offers lip enhancement procedures with Juvederm. Rhinoplasty surgery improves the appearance and proportion of your nose and enhances facial harmony and self-confidence. It is often used to correct a bump, wide tip or impaired breathing caused by abnormal structural development in the nose.

Many patients interested in this procedure want to know the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty, These terms are used to describe the surgical approach to reshaping the nasal tip.

Open rhinoplasty
This approach involves an incision along the columella (soft tissue between the nostrils). This allows the surgeon to see all parts of the nose more clearly, as they can lift the skin completely up over the nose. The benefit for surgeons is that diagnosis and treatment of tip problems can be far more accurate.

Usually the scar from an open rhinoplasty is virtually unnoticeable, and Dr. Miller always takes a significant amount of time to close the incision so it heals nicely.

“Patients with thicker skin may have a slightly higher chance of developing a scar that can be seen,” the mini facelift professional said. “However, when a surgeon with a lot of experience in rhinoplasty closes the incision, and locates it in an area under the nose that is not very visible, the incidence of a scar is greatly reduced.”

Closed rhinoplasty
A closed rhinoplasty means that all of the incisions are inside the nostril and there are no external scars. The sutures placed inside the nose do not need to be removed, as they are absorbable.

The closed approach may possibly mean faster healing than an open procedure, but ultimately, the healing time is directly related to the smoothness of the dissection. Most of the bruising and swelling usually lasts for seven to 10 days, with slight swelling lasting an additional couple of weeks. It is perfectly normal to experience some numbness in the nose for several weeks and sensitive areas for several months.

“While each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages, the technique used is a matter of the surgeon’s preference,” said Dr. Miller. “Some surgeons are adept at both techniques, so based on the case at hand, they will choose whichever one seems more appropriate.”

It is also important to fully discuss with your surgeon the changes you would like to make to your nose. The more detailed you are, the more your doctor will be able to understand your goals and choose the procedure that will help you achieve them.

As with every procedure, there are downfalls and trade-offs that the patient must consider. Don’t dwell on which procedure your surgeon will perform, as they are highly trained in their field. The focus should be on whether he or she will be able to give you the beautiful, stable results that you are looking for. The best way to know this is by looking at before and after photos of previous patients.

“If you have confidence in the surgeon, have confidence in his or her judgment,” said Dr. Miller as a liposuction Staten Island surgeon. “Most likely, the results will be better than you could have imagined if you feel comfortable with your surgeon.”
