Hair loss is a problem for millions of men and women. There are some medications that can thicken remaining hair, and countless offers of therapies online that claim to create hair where there is none. However, only hair transplantation has been documented scientifically for the last 25 years and is proven to work.
Hair transplantation is a permanent method of correcting hair loss. Actual hairs are taken from one area of the scalp and placed into a different location, where they take root and grow in a natural fashion.
There are three main areas where hair can be transplanted:
- The head
- The eyebrows
- The eyelashes
Hair Restoration Procedure
First, a consultation with one of our hair transplant specialists will allow discussion all of your questions and determine a plan. Usually this form of facial plastic surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation.
Donor hair is removed from the back of the head. This hair is usually programmed not to fall out, so transplanting this hair is what results in the permanent effect. We use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique, which removes the natural grouping of hairs either 1,2,3 or 4 in number. This method avoids the possibility of a linear scar.
The grafts are then inserted into the desired area – the frontal hairline, the eyebrows, or the eyelashes. Recovery is easy with a slight crusting over the donor and graft areas.
It is normal for the hairs to fall out for a couple of months, but then a nice growth should take place. The eyebrows and eyelashes will have to be trimmed and styled every couple of weeks, but patients love the fact that the hair is permanent.
It is important to keep expectations reasonable, but the creation of a visible hairline using natural hair is a great procedure that can really make a difference in one’s appearance.
