Bright, fresh looking eyes are an external reflection of your vitality and personality. Sadly, as we begin to age, our expressive eyes can be hindered from showing their true warmth as our eyes become hooded and bags begin to form. Drooping eyelids, puffy bags under your eyes, and sagging eyebrows lend a tired, worn look to the entire face. This isn't a reflection of who you truly are.
When eyelid surgery is performed on patients with aging eyes, it can result in eyes that look more alert, awake, refreshed, and youthful. Addressing issues of both the upper eyelid and lower eyelid, eyelid surgery is among the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures performed today. Let us help you rejuvenate your appearance and awaken your entire face with eyelid surgery.
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also referred to as an eye lift or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure which removes excess skin from the upper eyelids and corrects bags or a droopy appearance on the lower eyelids. It may also involve treating delicate eye muscles and removing fatty tissue from these areas.
As you age, the skin around the eye area often starts to droop. This, in turn, causes the muscles beneath the skin to weaken. As this process occurs, fatty deposits form in the skin around the eye making the area look puffy, giving the brows a droopy appearance, and leading to sagging eyelids with folds and overhangs, along with heavy bags under your eyes. This creates a facial appearance that is perceived as looking tired and worn.
Will I have visible scars after eyelid surgery?
For the eyelids, the upper lid incision is hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid. After surgery there is a little swelling, but gradually, the incision usually fades into a faint, thin line that's very hard to see. For the lower lids, if the incision is inside the eyelid, then there is no scar. If the incision is made on the skin, the line is usually 2 millimeters below the lash line and very hard to see when healed.
Does eyelid surgery affect eyesight?
Eyelid surgery, in general does not affect eyesight. Having said that, it is common to have some alteration right after surgery because the tear film is changed. This generally resolves over a few weeks. If the patients eyes continue to be dry, then sometimes a small long term changed in the eyeglass prescription can occur.
When is eyelid surgery medically necessary?
Blepharoplasty may also be medically necessary if there is irritation in the folds of the skin due to excess skin on the eyelids, or if it causes the muscles of the forehead to be fatigued from the excess weight of the skin around the eyes.
Ptosis is the medical term for skin which hangs from the eyelid and droops into the field of vision. Ptosis can occur over time as the eyelid skin and tissue drops from its natural position, blocking your ability to have a full field of vision.
What are the risks associated with eyelid surgery?
It is likely that the only change you will have in your vision following eyelid surgery will that things will appear slightly blurred following your surgery due to swelling and anesthetic. While severe complications from having an eye lift are rare, there is a rare possibility that your vision could be affected.
While complications are extremely rare, they are possible and include bleeding, infection, dry eyes, discoloring of the eyelids, unusual folds in the eyelids, the inability to close your eyes completely, lowering of the lower lash line, and loss of vision.
Tired eyes can cause you to look years older than your actual age and give your face the appearance that you are weary, sad, or angry. If you are troubled by dropping or sagging skin around the eye, an eye lift could brighten and refresh your eye area, removing years from your appearance and improving your field of vision.
