Plastic Surgeons Serving Edison, Marlboro, Warren, and West Orange, New Jersey

After childbirth and as time goes by, the female genitalia can lose muscle tone, as well as sensitivity. The appearance of this region can also be a concern to many women. Cosmetic surgery procedures such as vaginoplasty and labiaplasty can improve the appearance and function of the vulva and the vagina.1 These procedures improve the patient’s self-esteem, as well as decrease sexual discomfort and increase sensation, which enhances a woman’s overall sexuality.2

Benefits of Vaginal Rejuvenation

The benefits of labiaplasty and vaginoplasty can vary depending on the individual's goals and concerns. Here are some potential benefits:

  • Improved self-confidence: Women who are self-conscious about the appearance of their genital area may feel more confident and comfortable after undergoing labiaplasty.
  • Enhanced sexual pleasure: Vaginoplasty can tighten the vaginal muscles and tissues, increasing sexual sensation and satisfaction.
  • Improved comfort: Women who experience discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse, exercise, or other activities due to excess tissue or vaginal laxity may find relief after undergoing these procedures.
  • Correction of functional issues: In some cases, labiaplasty and vaginoplasty can correct functional issues such as urinary incontinence.3
  • Improved appearance: Labiaplasty can correct asymmetry and reduce the size and reshape the labia for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty surgery involves the creation or reshaping of the labia (inner and outer lips) of the vagina. Labiaplasty may be performed to revise and improve anomalies or congenital conditions such as large or prolapsed inner lips of the labia (labia minora) as well as excess tissue in the outer lips (labia majora). Labiaplasty may also be performed to repair the labia in reconstructive surgery following disease or injury, especially childbirth.

Labiaplasty can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, mild IV sedation, or general anesthesia.4 After the repair, the dissolvable sutures disappear in a week or two. The result is a more youthful appearing labia, with less discomfort (panty irritation), and increased erotic satisfaction in many patients.

The Vaginoplasty Procedure

A vaginoplasty may be recommended when the vulva undergoes undesirable changes from aging or pregnancy. These changes include loss of firmness of the outer lips of the labia (labia majora) and loss of fullness and padding of the vaginal canal and mucosa. Additionally, a vaginoplasty may be recommended when the birth canal delivery or episiotomy tear has relaxed vaginal support.

The surgery involves making internal incisions to tighten the musculature, resulting in greater contraction strength and control.5 This causes an increase in the amount of friction during sexual activity and the improvement of sexual satisfaction of both partners. Dissolvable sutures are placed and recovery is about two weeks.

FAQs About Vaginal Rejuvenation

What is the difference between labiaplasty and vaginoplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and reshapes the labia, while vaginoplasty tightens and strengthens the vaginal muscles and tissues.

How long does the recovery process take?

The recovery process can vary depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure, but it typically takes several weeks to a few months to fully recover.

Will I experience pain after the procedure?

Pain is common after the procedure, but it can be managed with pain medication and proper care.

Are there any risks or complications associated with these procedures?

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications such as infection, bleeding, and scarring. However, these risks can be minimized by choosing a qualified surgeon and following post-operative instructions.

Can labiaplasty or vaginoplasty affect future pregnancies or childbirth?

Labiaplasty generally does not affect future pregnancies or childbirth, but vaginoplasty can potentially impact vaginal delivery and should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Is clitoral hood reduction included in labiaplasty procedures?

Clitoral hood reduction is sometimes included as part of labiaplasty, but it is not always necessary or recommended for all patients. The clitoral hood is the fold of skin that covers the clitoris, and excess tissue in this area can cause discomfort during sexual activity or interfere with orgasm.6 Some women may choose to have the clitoral hood reduced in size as part of their vaginal rejuvenation procedure to improve their sexual experience.

How can I get rid of fat in the upper pubic area (FUPA)?

This area can be addressed with monsplasty, also known as a pubic lift or pubic mound reduction. This procedure is designed to reshape and/or reduce the mons pubis, which is the fatty tissue located on the pubic bone above the genital area. The monsplasty procedure typically involves making incisions in the pubic area and removing excess skin and/or fat via liposuction. The remaining tissue is then reshaped and lifted to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Are there any non-surgical options for vaginal rejuvenation?

Yes, there are non-surgical options for vaginal rejuvenation, which are becoming increasingly popular. Non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation involves using various technologies, such as lasers, radiofrequency, or ultrasound, to stimulate collagen production, tighten the tissues of the vaginal area, and improve dryness.

Will my insurance cover the cost of these procedures?

Labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are typically considered cosmetic procedures and are not covered by insurance, but it's important to check with your insurance provider to confirm their policies.
