CoolSculpting Explained by an Expert

Interviewer: Dr. Julie.

Dr. Julie: Yes.

Interviewer: How exactly does CoolSculpting work?

Dr. Julie: That’s a great question. I’m Dr. Julie, a board-certified doctor with more than 20 years of cosmetic surgery experience.

I’ve been doing CoolSculpting for almost 15 years now, and I’m going to give you the skinny on CoolSculpting. So CoolSculpting, as I said, has been around for about 16 years. It’s FDA-approved, and it’s a great way to help you get rid of pockets of fat in your trouble areas.

CoolSculpting works because fat is more sensitive to cold than other cells in the body, like skin, muscle, or nerves, and, in fact, it was developed in Harvard when a doctor who worked on the Pediatric Cancer Board noticed that kids who suck on a lot of ice pops lost the fat in their cheeks.

What happens when you come in for CoolSculpting: so the first thing is that I protect your skin with a little pad, and then the magic is all in the applicator. The applicator sucks your fat and freezes it between two cooling plates down to about minus 10 degrees Celsius. The applicator sits here for about 35 minutes. I take it off, give you a quick little 2-minute massage, and you’re good to go. Then the fat dies naturally over the next 6 months with a process called apoptosis, and your body just cleans up the mess. The macrophages and the immune system come in and just get rid of everything that doesn’t need to be recirculated and recycle what it does need. And you excrete the rest.

So, one of the results with CoolSculpting: You can lose about 20 to 30% of your fat in a given treated area. It’s really kind of painless, just a little uncomfortable, and in a few months you’ll be looking great!
